These days it is not hard to knock up a piece of software that looks pretty and does nothing in about 10 minutes. You click the link and then just get send to a website that is nothing but ads. This is pretty harmful but it still falls into the category of Runescape scams.

Pay Per Install Spyware

There are companies out there that will pay programmers a few cents for anyone who installs their software with bundled up spyware. So just like in the previous example they make a pretty program that does nothing, but they also add the spyware code and then distribute this over Torrent and all the peer to peer networks. You download it, thinking its a Runescape password cracker and end up installing Spyware on your own computer. The programmer gets paid, you get scammed!

Email Lists

Another place I have seen this software promoted is on a membership site. All you need to do to download it is just sign up, and of course give your email address (and perhaps other personal information) in the process. If you do this, be prepared for an avalanche of spam coming through your inbox because once you get on one of those email lists you’ll never get off it.

Furthermore, these lists get sold you end up being mailed junk not only from the person who scammed you in the first place, but also from all the people he sold your email address to!
